'Don't Worry Darling' Twist and Ending Explained (2024)

The wait for one of the most highly-anticipated movies of the year is finally over. Don't Worry Darling is out in theatres now.

Starring Florence Pugh as adoring wife Alice to husband Jack, played by Harry Styles, Don't Worry Darling follows the couple as their seemingly perfect lives in a 1950s suburban town begin to unravel for the worst.

Jack works for the vaguely titled "Victory Project", headed by the dashing and charismatic leader, Frank, portrayed by Chris Pine. The men and their wives seem to have it all and are living the 1950s conservative American dream: Men as the breadwinner and the women as the bread-makers.

However, the longer, Alice continues to stay in Victory, the more she becomes haunted by dark visions as well as suspicious about the town named Victory the Victory Project and what it all means for her and Jack.

Don't Worry Darling has audiences in suspense throughout, with them asking the same question as Alice herself,"what is the Victory project?"

Newsweek has the full recap of the big Don't Worry Darling twist and what happened at the end.

The Don't Worry Darling Twist Explained

When Alice is taken away by the men in red suits at Jack's (shocking) request, she receives shock treatment therapy along with a whole cocktail of drugs, administered by the powerful Dr. Collins (played by Timothy Simons).

As a part of a series of flashbacks, audiences learn of what Alice and Jack's life was like before heading to Victory. The first twist of all is that Victory is not set in the present day, it is actually an alternate reality where men are powerful, the women are docile and everything and everyone is controlled by Frank.

In the real world, Alice worked as a nurse and Jack was unemployed, reversing the stereotypical roles that are at play in Victory.

During a flashback, audiences catch a glimpse of Jack asking his girlfriend Alice one morning in bed how he will "take care of her" to which she tells him not to worry, he will find a new job and she will take on more shifts in the meantime.

However, what looked like domestic bliss had turned sour as Alice was overworked at the hospital and Jack remained unemployed, looking more disheveled as time went by.

'Don't Worry Darling' Twist and Ending Explained (1)

While Alice worked tirelessly at the hospital, Jack was left alone at home, where he fell deep down into a dark corner of the internet and came across the Victory Project.

Don't Worry Darling then jumps back to Alice and Jack in Victory. Alice is out of the hospital, feeling better than ever however, her world comes crashing down around her when she realizes how she ended up in Victory in the first place.

As she prepares dinner for Jack begins humming a tune, the one audiences have heard throughout the entire movie, the same tune Alice has been unable to get out of her head.

It turns out, the shock treatment, hospital stay and the copious amount of drugs have not worked on Alice and she realizes, the song Jack was humming was from her previous lie in the real world and Jack was the one who brought her Victory, against her will.

In a creepy twist, audiences see flashes of Alice being tied down to her bed unconscious, hooked up to a whole host of machines, and her eyes being peeled open. A montage then plays out of Jack signing up for the Victory project, creating his own profile, and assigning Alice as his wife (without her consent). He then climbs into bed next to an unconscious Alice and hooks himself up to the same machine and peels his own eyes open.

He holds Alice's hand and the timeline flashes back to present-day Victory, where Jack admits to Alice what he did, leading to an epic screaming match between the couple, who are fighting for their love and about their differing views on freedom.

What Happened At The End of Don't Worry Darling?

It is no secret Alice and Jack are head over heels in love, but love makes people do crazy things.

Jack, failing to provide for his girlfriend in the real world, entered them both into the distorted reality of Victory, where their life could be picture perfect and the way he wanted it to be. He would be the successful one, providing for the love of his life and keeping her safe, she would be staying at home, tending to him, and having fun with her friends.

'Don't Worry Darling' Twist and Ending Explained (2)

Alice, (understandably) completely freaks and asked for a moment to process her thoughts. She desperately tries to break free of Jack's grasp as he holds on tightly to her waist and breaks down in front of her eyes.

However, his grasp becomes overpowering and is crushing Alice, leading her to smash a glass over his head, killing him.

Alice's best friend Bunny (Olivia Wilde) then busts into the house, screaming at Alice to drive and get out of Victory but Alice refuses to leave until Bunny tells her the truth.

It turns out, Bunny knew all along Alice and the other wives were here against their will, but not her, she chose to be at Victory because, in the world of Victory, she would not have to experience ever losing her children like she did in the real world.

Bunny also explains that if a person dies in Victory, they die in the real world too, meaning Jack is really dead in the present day. Unless people can come back from the dead in Victory...but that is not exactly confirmed.

Alice manages to flee the town of Victory and heads straight to headquarters, chased by the men of the town. She makes it to the top of the hill, where the center of Victory's power lies. Before, pushing her hands against the glass to escape back to reality, a vision of Jack appears, embracing her.

As chaos ensues, Frank's wife Shelley (Gemma Chan) stabs him, realizing the true evil nature of what he has created.

But, does Alice make it back to the real world or does she stay in Victory?

As she places her hands on the glass windows a montage appears of her and Jack crazy in love, the women of Victory, smiling drinking cleaning, and dancing as well as a mix of the haunting visions Alice was having, fading into nothing.

A voice can then be heard saying: "Once you accept reality, you can let it go."

As the screen fades to black before the credits role, Alice can be heard making a huge gasp, suggesting she may have made it back to the real world, after all, waking up from what she hopefully believes to be, a very bad dream.
