If you get an error message when you try to download and install Google Chrome, try these fixes.

Fix most installation errors

  1. Make sure your internet connection is working normally. If your internet connection is unstable, learn how to fix connection errors.
  2. Check if your device meets the system requirements.
  3. Downloadthe installation file againfromgoogle.com/chrome. Use the new file to install Chrome again.
  4. If the installation still isn't working, use an offline installer:
    • Computers with multiple user accounts
    • Computers with one user account

Get help with a specific error message

Error 1603 and 0x00000643 on Windows

If you install an application for the first time and you get one of these errors, report this issue in the Chrome Help Forum.

If you get an error after you install an app:

  1. Go toMicrosoft Fix it.
  2. Click Download.
  3. Run the program.
  4. Follow the instructions to fix the problem.

Can't connect to the Internet on Windows

If you can’t connect because of firewall, anti-virus software, or proxy

To fix, add the firewall, anti-virus software, or proxy to your security software's exceptions list. If you use Windows Firewall, follow these steps:

  1. On your Windows computer, click the Start menu: Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (1)or Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (2).
  2. Open the Windows Settings app.
  3. In the "Find a setting" search box, type Firewall.
  4. Click Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
  5. Click Change Settings.
  6. Click Allow another app Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (3) Browse.
  7. At the top, in the Browse window, type %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Google\Update.
  8. Find and select the folder with the highest number.
  9. Click GoogleUpdate.exeFix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (4)Add.

If you use other firewall software, visit the software company’s website to learn how to add it to your exceptions list.

If you can’t connect because of unsupported proxy server

Check if you’re on a supported proxy:

  • Negotiate authentication scheme, including Kerberos and NTLM.
  • Proxies using “integrated authentication,” if the person is allowed to use that proxy.

If the computer’s Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) doesn’t start

Make sure BITS is turned on:

  1. On your Windows computer, click the Start menu: Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (5)or Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (6).

  3. Right-clickBackground Intelligent Transfer Service.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. Under the "General" tab, check if ”Startup type” is set to Automatic (Delayed Start),Automatic, or Manual.Make sure this setting is not disabled.

If you continue to have issues, check if you can editC:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\

To get edit access:

  1. Right-click the folder.
  2. Select Properties.
  3. Under "General," turnonRead-only.
  4. Click OK.

If you can’t check the box, contact your system administrator.

Can’t install Chrome because you’re in S mode

  1. Switch out of S mode on your computer. To learn about S mode and how to install Chrome, go to the Microsoft Help Center.
  2. Download the installation file for Chrome.
  3. If prompted, click Run or Save.
  4. If you chose Save, double-click the download to start installing.
  5. Start Chrome:
    • Windows 7: A Chrome window opens once everything is done.
    • Windows 8 & 8.1: A welcome dialog appears. Click Next to select your default browser.
    • Windows 10: A Chrome window opens after everything is done. You can make Chrome your default browser.

Can't find installer application on Windows

  1. On your Windows computer, click the Start menu: Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (14)or Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (15).
  2. ClickRun.
  3. In the "Run" window, enter regedit.
  4. Click OKFix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (16)Yes.
  5. In the "Registry Editor" window, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Google\Update\Clients.
    • If you don’t see the application under that key, try looking for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Google\Update\Clients.
  6. Right-click 430FD4D0-B729-4F61-AA34-91526481799D.
  7. ClickDelete.
  8. Close "Registry Editor."
  9. Install Chrome again.

Error 0x80070070 on Windows

Your system disk is full. To fix, free up space on your system disk (usually disk C).

Stop GoogleCrashHandler.exe from running on Windows

GoogleCrashHandler.exe sends information about crashes to Google when they affect your Google applications.

If you don’t want to send crash information to Google, turn off the sending of usage statistics for your computer.

Visit the product's Help Center for more information.

Installation failed because your version of Windows is not supported

If you get the “OS not supported” error, it may be because Installer does not support your operating system.

Check if your operating system is currently supported.

Google Chrome is already installed for all users on your Windows computer

Your computer already has Google Chrome installed. The version of Chrome that you already have will launch.

If you want to use a different version of Chrome, uninstall Google Chrome and then download and install it again.

Can't install because you're not an administrator on Windows

To check if you're an administrator:

  1. On your Windows computer, click the Start menu: Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (17)or Fix problems installing Chrome - Google Chrome Help (18).
  2. Click Run.
  3. Entercontrol userpasswords2
  4. Click OK.
  5. Check if your username has the “Administrators Group.”

To get administrator access, contact your system administrator.

Error 4, 7, 12, 13, 31, 35, 57, 102, or 103

If you're having problems installing Chrome on your computer, you may see the following errors:

  • Error 4: A newer version of Chrome is already present on the computer.
  • Errors 7, 12, 13, 35, 57, 102, 103: The install failed for unknown reasons.
  • Error 31: Could not re-install Chrome.

Try the possible fixes below.

Step 1: Check if your computer has enough space

You might run into a problem if there's not enough space on your computer for Chrome.

  1. Free up hard drive space by deleting unnecessary files, such as temporary files, browser cache files, or old documents and programs.
  2. Download Chrome again from google.com/chrome.
  3. Try reinstalling.

Step 2: Turn off your antivirus software

Some antivirus software can prevent Google Chrome from installing on the computer.

  1. Turn offyour antivirus software.
  2. Download Chrome again from google.com/chrome.
  3. Try reinstalling.
  4. Turn your antivirus software back on.

If you can't install Google Chrome with your antivirus software turned off, you might need to upgrade your antivirus software.

Step 3: Download Chrome again

Download Chrome again from google.com/chrome. Try reinstalling.

If you can't complete these steps, contact your system administrator.
