HADLEY, Mass. –Trinity's Spencer Fetter and Tufts' Jaden Richardson shared the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year honor, while Tomás Kenary of Middlebury was voted as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year and Hamilton's Luke Kurzum was selected as the NESCAC Rookie of the Year. The Middlebury coaching staff was voted as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers.
Fetter is the fourth Trinity player to garner the NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year honor and the first since 2018. The graduate student, who was also named to the All-NESCAC squad for the second year in a row, threw for 2,567 yards and 32 touchdowns to lead all quarterbacks in the conference. Fetter averaged 285.2 yards per game and registered a completion rate of 63.4 percent this season. In his final game in a Trinity uniform, Fetter set a program record with seven touchdown passes in a win over Bowdoin to help the Bantams finish with an 8-1 record and secure a share of the NESCAC title for the fifth time in seven seasons.
Richardson is the second consecutive Tufts wide receiver to be named NESCAC Offensive Player of the Year, joining Phil Lutz in 2022, and the fifth Jumbo to earn the honor. Richardson recorded 46 catches for 830 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023. The senior averaged 18.0 yards per catch and 92.2 yards per game and finished the year as Tufts' all-time receiving touchdown leader with 20 in his career. Richardson helped the Jumbos post a 6-3 record.
Kenary, a semifinalist for the Gagliardi Trophy, is the fourth Panther to be selected as the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year. The senior defensive lineman led the NESCAC in tackles for loss (19.5) for 108 yards and recorded a league-high 11.5 sacks, the second most in a single season at Middlebury. Kenary, who picked up his third straight All-NESCAC accolade and was the NESCAC Co-Rookie of the Year in 2021, also broke the school record for career sacks (24.5).
Kurzum is the second Hamilton player to earn NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors, joining John Lawrence in 2006. The newcomer threw for 1,176 yards and seven touchdowns and scored three times on the ground. Kurzum threw for a season-high 211 yards versus Williams and passed for 177 yards and two touchdowns including the game-winning score in a five-overtime win over Tufts. The Continentals closed out the season by winning three of their final four games.
The Middlebury coaching staff was voted as the NESCAC Coaching Staff of the Year by their peers. Under the direction of Doug Mandigo, in his first year at the helm, the Panthers posted an 8-1 record in 2023 and earned a share of the conference title for the fifth time overall and the second time in four seasons.
